I just received an email with worrisome news from Washington, D.C. on Fusarium, a mold associated with contact lens use, that is proposed as an herbicide to be used on drug crops in South America. This is a fast mutating fungus with known harmful effects on immunocompromised individuals, including possibly malnourished children.
I believe that every mold sufferer would be sensitive to the deliberate use of mold to destroy crops, legal or illegal. There would be no way to contain the effects much less protect the innocent. By this, I mean, there are some really dedicated and hard working herbalists who have spent decades developing the markets for useful herbs, often for the export market, so that farmers who have depended on poppies or coca for a living can grow herbs such as jergon sacha, used in the treatment of AIDS and suited to the same habitats as coca. Introducing a horrific biocide would have untold harmful effects on both people and crops so I would urge you to take a politically active position against this ill-conceived proposal.
